Superstorm Sandy
In December 2012, the Brooklyn Long-Term Recovery Group (BLTRG) was formed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy as a volunteer organization targeting local communities for disaster relief and recovery. Its mission was to assess and address the unmet needs of Brooklyn residents impacted by Superstorm Sandy through collaboration with community and faith-based organizations, government agencies, national recovery agencies, and the private sector while focusing on long-term recovery efforts.
Those with unmet needs that our organization sought to serve included the undocumented, people with disabilities. single parents and single guardians with children, seniors, renters, homeowners. low-income families, children, youth, small business owners, and immigrants with language and cultural barriers, as well as anyone needing mental health and spiritual care. We conservatively estimate that the population we served was well over 100,000 Brooklyn men, women, and children while realizing that it may be more than twice that.
This coalition consists of community and faith-based groups, with members who speak well over 25 different languages and represent many religious denominations.
